Your credit utilization ratio is your total credit card balances divided by your total credit limits, shown as a percentage. Scoring models look at both your overall ratio and the ratio on each individual card, so a single maxed-out card can hurt even when your overall number looks fine.
Utilization % = (Total balances ÷ Total credit limits) × 100Say you have two cards: one with a $2,000 balance on a $5,000 limit, and one with $500 on a $5,000 limit. Your total balance is $2,500 against $10,000 in limits, so your overall utilization is 25%. Paying the first card down to $1,000 would drop your overall ratio to 15%.
Under 30% is the common guideline, and under 10% is where many of the highest scores land. There is no single cutoff that guarantees a score change, since criteria vary, but lower is generally better.
Enough to bring both your overall utilization and your highest single-card utilization down. This calculator shows the target balance to reach a given ratio. Paying down before your statement closing date can help the lower balance report sooner.
Usually the opposite. Closing a card removes its limit from your total available credit, which can raise your overall utilization. Keeping older cards open generally helps.
