Federal or Private? The Answer Changes Everything.

Refinancing a federal student loan into a private one is permanent. Before anyone shows you a rate, you should understand what you would be giving up.

What you give up with federal loans

Refinancing federal loans into a private loan cannot be undone. You would give up income-driven repayment, forgiveness programs including Public Service Loan Forgiveness, and federal deferment and forbearance options. Private loans do not carry those protections, which is why they are usually the better refinance candidate.

Probably should not refinance federal loans

    • Public service, teaching, healthcare, or government work
    • Anyone pursuing loan forgiveness
    • Anyone who might need income-based payments later

    Refinancing usually suits

    • Borrowers with private student loans
    • Stable income and no need for federal protections
    • Credit strong enough to earn a better rate

    Should you refinance?

Two questions. We will give you a straight answer, even when the answer is no.

What kind of student loans do you have?

We Will Tell YouWhen Not to Refinance.

A lender's site has one job: get you to apply. We are a credit consulting firm first, which means we can afford to tell you the truth. Sometimes that truth is that your federal loans are worth keeping exactly where they are.

    How It Works

Three Steps, No Credit Hit to Look

    1

    Check your rate

Answer a few questions to see what you may qualify for. This is a soft inquiry, so your score is not affected.

    2

    Compare your offers

Look at rate, term, and monthly payment together. A longer term lowers the payment but can raise the total interest you pay.

    3

Your new lender pays off the old loans

Keep paying your current loans until you have written confirmation they are paid in full.

    What You'll Need

    Have These Handy

Checking your rate takes a few minutes. Having these four things nearby makes it faster.

    Your loan details

Balances and servicer information for each loan you want to refinance.

    Your income

Steady, verifiable income that comfortably covers the payment.

    Your credit

It shapes the rate more than the approval. Better credit, better terms.

    A finished program

Most lenders require you to have completed your degree or program.

    A note on grace periods

If you recently finished school, you may still be in your grace period, and refinancing can end it early. Tell us where you are in that window and we will factor it in before you do anything.

Rates and terms vary by credit, income, and lender. Savings depend on your rate, balance, and term.
