A fixed-rate installment loan is amortized, meaning each equal monthly payment covers the interest for that month plus a portion of the principal. Early payments are mostly interest; later payments are mostly principal. This calculator uses the standard amortization formula so your estimate matches what a lender would quote.
Payment = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1), where r = monthly rate, n = number of paymentsA $20,000 loan at 8% over 5 years works out to roughly $406 a month and about $4,300 in total interest. Stretch the same loan to 7 years and the payment drops, but the total interest climbs. The calculator lets you test each scenario.
Fixed-rate loans use an amortization formula based on the loan amount, the monthly interest rate, and the number of payments. Each payment covers that month's interest plus part of the principal.
A longer term lowers your monthly payment but you pay more interest overall. A shorter term costs more per month but far less in total. Compare the total cost for each.
Advertised rates usually go to borrowers with strong credit. Your actual rate depends on your credit profile, income, and the lender. Improving your credit before you apply can lower it.
This estimates principal and interest only. Taxes, fees, and add-ons vary by lender and product, so your final payment may differ.
